Comments:Looking on your site i have found my Great Grandad,I knew his name and his ship but not much more, his eldest and now only surviving daughter will be thrilled when i show her the information, she is 92! The information you have found is fantastic. There is a memorial in Southampton, near the docks that has my Great Grandads name on and i think it is dedicated to the S.S Southwestern.Thank you once again, a very informative site.

Comments:When I discovered your site by accident today, and read about your Great Grandfather, it brought a lump in my throat. I have just discovered the details about my Great Grandfather, who's been forgotten in family boxes and never spoken about. I never knew anything about the Merchant Navy, but thanks to your great website, I'm going to do some serious research. The brave men in the Merchant Navy during WW1 need to be remembered for the heroes that they were, and not left forgotten in family boxes. I am very grateful to you, and don't feel daunted by all the research that lies ahead of me. Thank you very much.

Good to see there are still people around to keep alive the traditions and memorys of our once Great Merchant Service, unfortuanetly left to degenerate by successive British governments.I consider myself very fortuanate to have been able to complete a lifetime in shipping (alas not in British ships for the last 20 years)Keep up the good work.

I would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all servicemen and those who died in both wars that we may be free of tyranny. We owe you all a debt that can never be repaid.. except by protecting that which you gave your lives without question. Rest in Peace all of you, may God protect your families until you are all reunited in His everlasting peace. God bless

She did have two children, but evidentally their father took them away and kept them away from their mother's family, after her death. They could not even be found for purposes of inheritance, at the deaths of their grandparents. Thanks for sharing your information about your great-grandfather. He was a great man! It choked me up to read that he was filling in for someone else on the ship, when it was attacked! It reminds me of what happened to one of my best friends from high school. Vince and I were both the children of career Marine Corps officers. He had a beautiful baritone voice, and we often sang duets together. His girlfriend was my best friend. After high school, he graduated from the US Naval Academy and began his career in the Marine Corps. In 1983, when the president had sent US forces into

I have also had a stronge attachment to the past, and to my ancestors, all my life. I also feel a strong connection to the military, being the daughter of a 35 year veteran of the Marine Corps, who served two tours in Viet Nam. My ex-husband also served on active duty with USAF, for what turned out to be the best four years of our 27 year marriage. You have given me some direction and inspiration on how to continue my own quest for a relative who was lost in a war. My mother's cousin, Lowell Smead, was lost on a mission over the Pacific, in WWII. Details are pretty sketchy, so I expect that I may need all the help I can get, in finding any record of him! Lowell was the only son of my grandfather's oldest sister, who married and moved away when Grandpa was quite young. He didn't know her very well, and my mother did not know her cousin. Comments: THE MEN WHO MISSED THE TIDE I was not born `till '41 - I wasn`t at the fore, But later on I sailed with men - they told me what they saw, There never was a `phony war` for the merchant men at sea, Especially in the early years - with two men lost from three. Sitting ducks for E-boats and explosives in `bomb ally`, An easy moving target, from engine room to galley. They were blown from burning ships - torpedoed by the Hun, Or victims of atrocity - shot by a Nippon gun. Plenty perished in lifeboats, many gave sharks a feast, Still pretty much defenceless, the ships rolled West and East. Comments:Your website very interesting. While I am not a Brit, I met many Merchantmen while in Cherbourg and in UK. I was on one of those slow moving US liberty ships during the last part of WWII and brought back US airman at the end of the conflict. The US doe not make a fuss about Merchantmen and their contribution, but there it is. I was only 16 years old then, I am now 75 but I saw my share. Thanks again for the memory. Regards, Joe Maquez

Comments:William, as a fellow lover of history and webmaster I know how much effort, time, energy and even finances it takes to research an ancestor. I know what it means to lay in bed at night, unable to sleep, because some clue has been found and needs to be examined. Yet the joy of finding even the smallest bit of information can only be felt by those who decide not to let their heritage be forgotten. I felt a passion for your ancestor in this website you have built. I'm sure your great-grandfather is smiling down on you. As I one heard it said... "Maybe the secret to immortality is to be remembered" Congrats on a great site and best wishes for all continued success.

I am wonderfully impressed and have bookmarked your site so I can finish my tour later on. I loved and enjoyed your site, and strive to improve my own skills with my websites so that I may actually impress you one day! Good for you! I think I will apply for your award after all; however, I am going to come back and have an other look. Well, anyway, I am thoroughly impressed and would love to tell my friends to check out a genuine site! :)
